Have you ever lost a big contract that seems your life depends on it?
Or have you ever been turned down on a juicy job offer you have always dreamt of?
I asked you these two questions to simply define what disappointment is. A situation where your expectation was turned down. It often feels that once your expectation is not realized, that will be the end of your existence.
The question is before you got to the point when you suddenly put all your hopes and aspirations on such expectation, have you not been living or surviving?
There is this maxim: “every disappointment is a blessing” but most times, when we are faced with disappointment, we don’t usually remember the maxim. We rather concentrate our minds on “why should this happen to me” syndrome.
Each time you ask “why should it be me” at any time you are hit with disappointment, you will only be feeding your mind with negative thinking and in no distant time, you will be in depression.
There was this brilliant young lady who was very happy to secure the job of her dream after graduation. Right from her first day at work, she noticed the untoward gesture of her boss on her. On getting home that day, the mother noticed, she was not excited on her first day at work. She inquired from her daughter about why she was not happy on her first day at work. Dora told her mother, how her boss was having frequent body contacts with her at every slightest opportunity to speak with her.
Mary told Dora, her daughter, to watch how the event will unfold itself and motivated her daughter never to give in to the pressure from her boss.
The second day at work, Michael, Dora’s boss in the office practically told her, that if she must stay on the job, she has to go by his terms and conditions. When Dora got home, she told her mother, how Michael had threatened her that unless she “danced to his tunes” she would not go far on the job. She also told her mother, how Michael sexually harassed her in his office that day.
Mary counseled her daughter on how she did not need to be sexually abused by any man before she could be successful in life.
After six months on the job, Dora tendered her resignation letter because she would not succumb to Michael’s demands as he continues to make life unbearable for her.
Dora having understudied the operations of the organization, decided to take the bull by the horn to establish a similar company.
Dora stayed focused on her business and worked so hard to build a formidable business empire for herself. The disappointment she met on her dream job eventually paid off for her.
5 FACTORS THAT TURN DISAPPOINTMENT TO THIS APPOINTMENT
- BELIEF
- DETERMINATION
- RE-DIRECTION
- LEVERAGE
- FOCUS
BELIEF
You need three types of belief systems to bring out the blessing in every disappointment you’re faced with.
You need to believe in God as the one who makes all things possible.
You need to believe in yourself and give no room for anyone to intimidate you.
You need to believe in your skills and knowledge you have gained over a period of time.
DETERMINATION
Any time you’re faced with disappointment you only have two options to choose from. You either live with disappointment or you leave disappointment behind you.
Dora in her own case left disappointment behind her and moved on with her life.
REDIRECTION
When you’re hit with disappointment, instead of bemoaning the situation for a long period of time, which could lead you into depression, see it as an act of redirection and discover a new purpose. Dora did just that, she didn’t have it in mind to own her business initially. But the disappointment from her dream job redirected her to become a business owner.
LEVERAGE
This is the act of taking advantage of a situation to make gain for yourself. Dora leveraged on her disappointment to fix her appointment.
FOCUS
Dora concentrated her effort on what she was doing and she became successful. Whenever you are hit with disappointment, look inward and learn from the disappointment, leverage on the situation to chart a new course for your life, stay focused and believe in your ability to achieve success while holding on to God to crown your efforts with success.
